Degrading surface-water-based natural organic matter and mitigating haloacetonitrile formation during chlorination: Comparison of UV/persulfate and UV/hydrogen peroxide pre-treatments

Haloacetonitriles (HANs) are unregulated disinfection by-products that are more toxic than regulated species. Therefore, efficient decomposition of HAN precursors prior to disinfection is crucial for allaying the potential HAN-induced health risks. This study investigated the key roles of ultraviolet-activated persulfate (UV/PS) treatment in alleviating HAN formation. The effects of UV/PS treatment were evaluated by correlating with the characteristics of organic matter in surface water and comparing with conventional UV/H2O2 treatment. Upon irradiating raw water samples and a Suwannee River humic acid solution spiked with 10 mM PS or H2O2 with 254 nm UV light, UV/PS treatment was found to be more potent than UV/H2O2 in mitigating the HAN production and degrading organic substances; moreover, UV/PS treatment effectively decreased the dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) content. In contrast, UV/H2O2 treatment did not induce any noticeable reduction in DON level. Furthermore, both UV/PS and UV/H2O2 treatments reduced the dichloroacetonitrile (DCAN) formation potential (FP), leading to strong correlations with the degradation of aromatic and humic-acid-like compounds. Notably, UV/PS treatment efficiently decreased the FP of bromochloroacetonitrile (BCAN) and dramatically reduced that of dibromoacetonitrile (DBAN) after a sharp increase; however, UV/H2O2 treatment gradually increased the DBAN-FP. Bromide was activated by sulfate radicals during UV/PS treatment, negatively correlating with the BCAN-FP and DBAN-FP, indicating that the formation of reactive bromine species increased the DBAN-FP; however, excessive oxidation possibly led to the recovery of inorganic bromine for decreasing the BCAN-FP and DBAN-FP. Additionally, UV/PS treatment effectively suppressed toxicity owing to its high reduction rate for brominated HANs; in contrast, UV/H2O2 treatment resulted in less significant BCAN and DBAN reductions, leading to minimal net reduction in toxicity. Overall, UV/PS treatment was remarkably effective at diminishing the toxicity of brominated HANs, underscoring its potential to mitigate drinking-water-related health risks.

Photo-Fenton inactivation of MS2 bacteriophage at alkaline pH by Fe salts or nm to μm-sized oxides, and the Janus-faced effects of natural organic matter in surface waters

In this study, MS2 bacteriophage was inactivated by homogeneous and heterogeneous photo-Fenton processes in an alkaline matrix (pH 8) using low concentrations of H2O2 and iron forms (1 mg/L), including Fe(II), Fe(III), and Fe (hydr)oxides. As a reference, it has been demonstrated that excellent efficiency towards MS2 inactivation was achieved within 2 min with Fe(II) and 10 min with Fe(III) in the homogeneous photo-Fenton process. Mined iron and five naturally occurring iron (hydr)oxides, including wüstite, goethite, hematite, magnetite, and maghemite, were used to assess the virus removal in the heterogeneous photo-Fenton process. Total (5-logU) inactivation of the MS2 bacteriophage was observed within 15–40 min by iron (hydr)oxides in the presence of light and H2O2. Photosensitization of natural organic matter had a significant impact on virus inactivation in both homogeneous and heterogeneous photo-Fenton processes, but dually; it enhanced the formation of complexes between organic matter and iron species, facilitating the homogeneous process at alkaline pH, but hindering the heterogeneous photo-Fenton reaction. Nevertheless, the heterogeneous photo-Fenton process may serve as an efficient method for the inactivation of enteric viruses in water, even at a slightly basic pH, despite the scavenging action of natural organic matter. The low-concentration requirements of this process and the availability of iron oxides in nature contribute to the sustainability of the process, which can be suitable for use in resource-poor environments.

Characterizing photochemical production carboxyl content of dissolved organic matters using absorbance spectroscopy combined with FT-ICR MS

Irradiation can significantly impact the structure, reactivity and environmental behavior of dissolved organic matter (DOM). The extent of these processes remains to be ascertained in more detail but the heterogeneity and site-specificity of DOM, and the lack of methods to characterize DOM at its environmentally-relevant concentrations make it a challenge. In this study, the differences of DOM response to photodegradation in four typical origins (i.e., surface water, sediment and intracellular and extracellular algal DOM) were tracked on the molecular-level using Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry (FT-ICR MS). Changes of the carboxyl and phenolic DOM moieties induced by irradiation were quantified by spectroscopic titrations, and the mechanism of functional groups affecting the changes of specific molecular composition was qualitatively proposed. The results demonstrated that intracellular algal organic matter (I-DOM) was most susceptible to photodegradation (ca. 63% DOM loss), then came extracellular algal organic matter (E-DOM) and surface water DOM (W-DOM) (ca. 15% DOM loss). Sediment DOM (S-DOM) was most resistant to irradiation, with a very small level of its mineralization. Lipids, lignin-like compounds and tannin-like compounds in I-DOM and E-DOM were relatively photo-labile. The photodegradation of lipids was related to the decarboxylation of carboxyl functional groups, while the photodegradation of tannin-like compounds was related to the rupture of phenolic functional groups. In comparison, the molecular composition of W-DOM and S-DOM was less affected by irradiation, which was also reflected in the fact that the carboxyl and phenolic functional groups were highly photo-resistant. This study showed that the photoactivity of DOM in surface water was closely related to the abundance of algae, so controlling the excessive reproduction of algae may have a positive effect on stability of quality and quantity of organic matter in surface water.

[Spectral Characteristics and Source Analysis of Chromophoric Dissolved Organic Matter in Surface Water of Taihu Lake Before Cyanobacterial Blooming].

Chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) is an important part of the nutrient biogeochemical cycle in aquatic ecosystems. To explore the characteristics and sources of CDOM components in the surface water of Taihu Lake, UV-visible spectroscopy and excitation emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy-parallel factor analysis were used to analyze CDOM components in surface water. Combined with CDOM optical parameters (a355, SUVA254, a250/a365, FI, BIX, and HIX), the spatial differences and pollution sources were identified, and a preliminary comparison was made between this study and the historical data of CDOM components in Taihu Lake. According to the results, a355, SUVA254, and a250/a365 showed the characteristics of high concentration, high aromatic ability, and low relative molecular weight of CDOM in the surface water of the eastern part of Taihu Lake; however, the northern part showed the opposite characteristics. Four components were isolated from CDOM using parallel factor analysis:one tyrosine-like (C1), two types of tryptophan (C2 and C4), and one fulionic acid (C3). The main component C1 had a strong linear relationship with the C2 and C3 components, suggesting that different components originated from similar pollution sources. The fluorescence index showed that CDOM in different areas of Taihu Lake were differently affected by endogenous and terrestrial inputs; however, the overall humification degree was low. This indicated that the CDOM components in Taihu Lake were primarily protein-like (C1, C2, and C4) (>85%) and autogenous, with good biochemical availability.

Characterization of copper binding to different molecular weight fractions of dissolved organic matter in surface water

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a kind of substance with complex compositions and wide molecular weight distribution, which can strongly combine with various pollutants. Therefore, the binding characteristics of DOM and heavy metal pollutants can be studied specifically according to the binding characteristics of DOM and pollutants. In this study, DOM in surface water bodies was divided into three levels (MW < 1 kDa, 1 kDa < MW < 5 kDa, MW > 5 kDa) according to different molecular weights (MW). The binding properties were investigated by fluorescence spectrum analysis and complex model. Four components (C1–C4) were identified by PARAFAC. Among them, the contribution rate of protein-like components C1, C2 and C4 to the total fluorescence intensity reached more than 78%, and the log Ka values of low molecular weight components were the highest, which were 3.28, 3.14 and 3.47, respectively, indicating higher binding ability with Cu2+.With the decrease of molecular weight, the log Kb value increases, indicating that the complexation is more stable. The humic component C3 in high molecular weight has stronger binding stability with Cu2+, but the number of binding sites for C3 is 0.36, while that for C2 is 1.51, indicating that its binding sites and binding ability are relatively low. The results showed that the DOM ligand of Cu2+ in surface water showed a certain molecular weight dependence. In addition, different MW DOM lead to different pollution forms. Different properties of DOM ligand combined with Cu2+ were studied in order to control the migration, transformation, bioavailability, morphology and stability of heavy metal pollutants, and to provide theoretical support for the practical application management of surface water pollution control.

Molecular composition of particulate organic matter in surface waters of the Harima-Nada, Seto Inland Sea, Japan

The coastal ocean is an important component of the global carbon budget and contains both terrestrial and internally produced organic matter. The use of specific organic compounds to estimate the origin of the carbon can improve understanding of organic material cycling in coastal ecosystems and the origins of food resources consumed by suspension feeders. In this study, samples of suspended particulate matter (SPM) in surface waters were collected in summer from the Harima-Nada, Seto Inland Sea, and spatial variations in the distributions of organic compounds were investigated and compared with that of chlorophyll as an indicator of primary production. High chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentrations were associated with riverine nutrient inputs in the northern Harima-Nada and with a tidal front in the south. Sterols, fatty acids, phytol, and lignin phenols were identified in the SPM samples. Short-chain fatty acids were dominant, with minor amounts of lignin phenols; this result indicates that the major carbon source of the SPM was aquatic organisms, especially microalgae. This interpretation is consistent with the bulk geochemical tracer results. Phytol showed a strong positive linear correlation with Chl a. The major sterols in the SPM samples were 4-methylsterols and 24-methylenecholesterol, which are derived mainly from dinoflagellates and diatoms, respectively. The strong correlation between phytosterol contents and Chl a indicates that total phytosterols reflect the total microalgal community abundance. The relative proportions of 4-methylsterols and other sterols were used to estimate the contributions of dinoflagellates and diatoms to Chl a: 34% of the total mean Chl a concentration was estimated to be derived from dinoflagellates and 66% from diatoms and other phytoplankton. This result is consistent with the reported occurrence of a red tide due to dinoflagellates on the day of observation.

Organic matter transformations are disconnected between surface water and the hyporheic zone

Abstract. Biochemical transformations of organic matter (OM) are a primary driver of river corridor biogeochemistry, thereby modulating ecosystem processes at local to global scales. OM transformations are driven by diverse biotic and abiotic processes, but we lack knowledge of how the diversity of those processes varies across river corridors and across surface and subsurface components of river corridors. To fill this gap we quantified the number of putative biotic and abiotic transformations of organic molecules across diverse river corridors using ultra-high-resolution mass spectrometry. The number of unique transformations is used here as a proxy for the diversity of biochemical processes underlying observed profiles of organic molecules. For this, we use public data spanning the contiguous United States (ConUS) from the Worldwide Hydrobiogeochemical Observation Network for Dynamic River Systems (WHONDRS) consortium. Our results show that surface water OM had more biotic and abiotic transformations than OM from shallow hyporheic zone sediments (1–3 cm depth). We observed substantially more biotic than abiotic transformations, and the numbers of biotic and abiotic transformations were highly correlated with each other. We found no relationship between the number of transformations in surface water and sediments and no meaningful relationships with latitude, longitude, or climate. We also found that the composition of transformations in sediments was not linked with transformation composition in adjacent surface waters. We infer that OM transformations represented in surface water are an integrated signal of diverse processes occurring throughout the upstream catchment. In contrast, OM transformations in sediments likely reflect a narrower range of processes within the sampled volume. This indicates decoupling between the processes influencing surface water and sediment OM, despite the potential for hydrologic exchange to homogenize OM. We infer that the processes influencing OM transformations and the scales at which they operate diverge between surface water and sediments.

Impacts of haze on the photobleaching of chromophoric dissolved organic matter in surface water

Sunlight plays an important role in the photochemical processes of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM), which is closely related to water self-purification and primary productivity of healthy aquatic ecosystem health. The fine particles of haze, a widespread air pollutant, absorb natural ultraviolet (UV) irradiation and have an unknown degree of influence on the photochemical transformation of CDOM. Here, an in-situ experiment investigating how the amount and composition of CDOM changes under hazy conditions was conducted in Ningbo, southeastern China, a city that frequently suffers from seasonal haze pollution. The results indicated that haze attenuated UV light under different weather conditions. The UV intensities were reduced from 1124.90 ± 91.58 to 510.26 ± 40.26 μW cm-2 and 748.54 ± 101.68 to 316.32 ± 40.48 μW cm-2 on sunny and cloudy days, respectively; these values approached those on rainy days (186.97 ± 28.58 μW cm-2). Consequently, the loss of dissolved organic carbon during the irradiation test was reduced on hazy days (e.g., from 5.63% to 2.59% on sunny/hazy days). The impact of haze on CDOM photobleaching was further assessed by an excitation-emission matrix (EEM) combined with parallel factor (PARAFAC) analysis. On hazy days, the EEM-PARAFAC components were saved from photobleaching to different degrees; and humic-like substances showed a stronger protective effect from haze than protein-like substances because of their higher photosensitivity. Consequently, haze could cause more terrestrial CDOM to remain in surface water. UV intensity played a critical role in the composition characteristics of CDOM. This study identifies the linkage between atmospheric pollution and water quality and demonstrates that long-term and large-scale haze may adversely influence aquatic ecology through pollutant/nutrient accumulation.

Characteristics of dissolved organic matter in surface water and sediment and its ecological indication in a typical mining-affected river-Le'an River, China.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays an important role in the cycling and toxicity of heavy metals in aquatic systems. However, most studies have focused only on DOM in either water or sediments. This study aimed to analyze the source, composition, and structural characteristics of DOM in both surface water and bottom sediments of the Le'an River and its major tributaries. In addition, the potential ecological risks of three typical heavy metals (Cu, Pb, and Zn) were quantitatively evaluated based on the characteristics of DOM and in situ data. The results showed that sediment DOM is more aromatic and hydrophobic than surface water DOM. Although humic-like components dominated the DOM pool in both surface water and sediments, their sources were different. Surface water DOM is mainly autochthonous, while sediment DOM is controlled by both autochthonous and allochthonous sources. Risk prediction results based on DOM characteristics show that surface water has a higher potential risk of heavy metal release than sediments. Comprehensively considering the ecological risk of water and sediments, high-risk areas were found to be mainly distributed in the upper and middle reaches of the Le'an River. This distribution is attributable to the developed mining and smelting industries in these areas and consistent with the risk assessment results of measured concentrations of heavy metals. This study established a new technique for predicting the ecological risk of aquatic systems based on the characteristics of DOM in surface water and sediments.

Responses of hepatic biotransformation and antioxidant enzymes in Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) exposed to humic acid.

Humic substances, a major component of natural organic matter in surface waters, can induce biotransformation enzyme activities and influence antioxidant defense in fish. The study aimed to provide a molecular basis for the stress responses, the synthesis of biotransformation, and antioxidant enzymes in particular. Adult medaka fish (Hd-rR strain) were exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of humic acid for 96h. The actual humic acid concentrations in water were determined photometrically and expressed as organic carbon concentrations. Liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry was used for protein profile analysis of medaka liver samples. The relative amount of isozymes was determined using the label-free quantification approach. Hepatic biotransformation enzyme activities were measured as well. Thus, ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase activity showed a pronounced induction at the highest tested concentration (9.4mg C/L). Various biotransformation and antioxidant isozymes responded to humic acid differently, reflecting a balanced interplay of proteins that ensures the metabolism of humic acid in fish liver. Some isozymes were not affected by humic acid. The study provides new insight into the molecular mechanisms of the fish stress response to the humic acid-related challenge.

Logjams and Channel Morphology Influence Sediment Storage, Transformation of Organic Matter, and Carbon Storage Within Mountain Stream Corridors

AbstractThe flow of organic matter (OM) along rivers and retention within floodplains contributes significantly to terrestrial carbon storage and ecosystem function. The storage and cycling of OM largely depend upon hydrogeomorphic characteristics of streams and valleys, including channel geometry and the connectivity of water across and within the floodplain. To examine the role of river morphology on carbon dynamics in mountain streams, we (a) quantify organic carbon (OC) storage in fine sediment, litter, and wood along 24 forested gravel‐bed stream reaches in the Rocky Mountains of CO, USA, (b) examine morphological factors that regulate sediment and OC storage (e.g., channel width, slope, logjams), and (c) utilize fluorescence spectroscopy to examine how the composition of fluorescent dissolved OM in surface water and floodplain fine sediment are influenced by channel morphology. Multivariate regression of the study reaches, which have varying degrees of confinement, slope, and elevation, indicates that OC storage per area is higher in less confined valleys, in lower gradient stream reaches, and at higher elevations. Within unconfined valleys, limited storage of fine sediment and greater microbial transformation of OM in multithread channel reaches decreases OC storage per area (252 ± 39 Mg C ha−1) relative to single‐thread channel reaches (346 ± 177 Mg C ha−1). Positive feedbacks between channel morphology and persistent channel‐spanning logjams that divert flow into multiple channels may limit the aggradation of floodplain fine sediment. Although multithread stream reaches are less effective OC reservoirs, they are hotspots for OM decomposition and provide critical resources to downstream food webs.

Potential Complexing Ability of Surface Water Organic Matter: I. Role of Various Groups in Metal Ion Binding

The results of experimental studies of the potential complexing ability of dissolved organic matter (DOM) of surface water bodies with respect to Al3+, Fe3+, and Cu2+ ions are discussed. The concentrations of certain groups of natural organic substances, in particular, humic substances, carbohydrates, and protein-like compounds as the most probable complexing ligands, have been determined in water samples collected from the Kanev reservoir (upper section) and Lake Verbnoe (Kiev). The potential complexing capacity of DOM with respect to all bound metals has been estimated at 11.0–15.5 and 14.9–15.8 µmol/L for the Kanev Reservoir and Lake Verbnoe, respectively, without appreciable seasonal changes. A significant part of metal ions are bound into complexes during the first day of the experiment (total duration 28 days), and the equilibrium state is achieved mainly within 7 days. Humic substances as the largest component of DOM contribute most to the complexation of metal ions. Participation of carbohydrates in metal binding also increases in the summer–autumn period. Cationic metal complexes with proteinaceous compounds are minor components. Seasonal variations in the metal ion binding by particular groups of DOM are also considered.

Wintertime particulate organic matter distributions in surface waters of the northern California current system

Semi-automated sampling via the surface underway systems of research vessels was used to explore the distribution and composition of particulate organic matter in surface waters of the northern California Current ecosystem during winter, a poorly studied period that is characterized by downwelling favorable winds and elevated discharge by coastal rivers. New wintertime observations were compared to those measured during a summer cruise characterized by strong upwelling and highly reduced coastal river flows. Particulate organic carbon (POC) concentrations in surface waters along the Oregon shelf during winter periods were significantly lower (7.0 ± 5.0 μM) than those measured in the same region during summer (21 ± 25 μM) with similar seasonal contrasts in chlorophyll (Chl) concentrations (1.7 ± 1.7 mg Chl m−3 in winter and 8.7 ± 3.8 mg Chl m−3 in summer). The combination of POC, Chl, and particle beam attenuation (cp) measurements revealed spatial and temporal distributions that confirm the importance of physical drivers such as wind, waves and river discharge in influencing the biogeochemistry of eastern boundary current systems during non-upwelling conditions. Elevated contributions of allocthonous particulate materials with distinct compositional characteristics, including low Chl:POC and POC:cp ratios, were measured during winter in low-density, low-salinity surface waters influenced by coastal river discharge. In contrast, mid-salinity, intermediate-density surface waters exhibited higher concentrations of POM with elevated Chl:POC and POC:cp ratios, which approached those measured during highly productive summer upwelling periods. These results are solid evidence for wintertime phytoplankton productivity along this margin under elevated buoyancy and nutrient contributions from the discharge of coastal rivers.

DNA damage of human derived liver cell line HL-7702 induced by organic extracts from surface water in Pearl River Delta, China.

Many organic pollutants attract public health concern due to their genotoxicity. To investigate the genotoxicity of organic matter in surface water of the Pearl River Delta (PRD). Organic substances of 24 samples (dry and wet season) from North River, West River and East River were extracted from 60 L source water by XAD-2 macroporous resin. DNA damage effect of organic extracts was tested in human derived liver cells (HL-7702), using single cell gel electrophoresis (SCGE) assay. The results showed that 100% organic extracts (24/24) could induce DNA damage in HL-7702 cells when the concentration was above 1.0 L surface water/ml culture, no significant difference of DNA damage between dry and wet seasons was observed. The organic substance-induced DNA damage in HL-7702 cells was significantly (P < 0.05) correlated with the contents of Dissolved Organic Carbon in both seasons and Total Suspended Solids in dry season. In conclusion, organic extracts induced genetic damage in HL-7702 cells, indicating potential genotoxicity of organic pollutants of surface water from PRD, South China.

Between-summer comparison of particulate organic matter in surface waters of a coastal area influenced by glacier meltwater runoff and retreat

We evaluated, in two consecutive austral summers, the biochemical composition, sources, distribution and degradation state of particulate organic matter (POM) in surface coastal waters of Collins Bay, King George Island, Antarctica. Bulk elemental and stable isotope analyses were combined with molecular-level proxies (fatty acids and amino acids) to obtain more comprehensive evidence about POM characteristics. Two different settings were recognized. In February 2016, there was a reduced glacier melting condition and meltwater runoff due to cold weather. Marine fresh phytoplankton and ice-associated POM with the dominance of diatoms, bacteria, zooplankton and ice-associated fauna were the major components of POM. In contrast, in January 2017 under increased glacier melting and meltwater runoff due to warm weather conditions, suspended POM was constituted by marine phytoplankton, Rhodophyta macroalgae detritus and an increased terrestrial contribution. The lower degradation state of suspended POM in February 2016 than in January 2017 and the early bacterial response to the input of fresh protein-rich organic matter derived from marine phytoplankton, mainly diatoms, was supported. Our results provide evidence of the negative impact of glacier retreat and increased meltwater runoff on POM features in Collins Bay, which can be relevant to other Antarctic coastal marine ecosystems.

Variations in stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes of particulate organic matter in surface waters of water-receiving area of Eastern Route of South-to-North Water Transfer Project, China.

The purpose of this study was to assess the water quality and variations in stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes of particulate organic matter (δ13CPOM and δ15NPOM), as well as to evaluate the sources of carbon and nitrogen that contribute to the POM pools in lakes and reservoirs located in the water-receiving area of the Eastern Route of South-to-North Water Transfer Project (SNWTP) in Northern China. During each season from October 2013 to July 2014, samples of POM from 14 lakes and reservoirs in Northern China were collected. The lakes and reservoirs were meso-eutrophic with considerably high brackish ions (SO42-, 173mg/L; Cl-, 296mg/L) in Yangtze River lake, and high total nitrogen: total phosphorus ratio (averaged with 772) or dissolved inorganic nitrogen: soluble reactive phosphorus molar ratios (averaged with 1077) in mountainous reservoirs. The δ13CPOM, δ15NPOM, carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratios showed significant seasonal variation, with ranges of - 32.5 to - 17.4‰, - 3.6 to 13.5‰, and 5.1-13.2, respectively, while they were hard to be distinguished among types of water sources. Principal component analysis (PCA) indicated that brackish ions, nutrients, and their molar ratios were the main factors influencing variations in δ13CPOM and δ15NPOM. δ13CPOM and C/N ratios suggested autochthonous primary production mainly contributed to POM during from April to October, while exogenous organic matter might mainly contribute these carbon pools in January. The low values of δ15NPOM (< 0‰) and negative correlation between δ15NPOM and TN suggested discharge of agricultural waste water (e.g., fertilizers, irrigation tailwater) in Bailanghe, Xinan, and Taihe Reservoir during the fertilization season, while higher values indicated domestic sewage input to waterbodies (e.g., Mishan, Gengjing, Donghai Reservoir). Our results suggested that the aquatic ecosystem in water-receiving area of SNWTP would be potentially affected by the inter-basin water diversion, and thus, ecosystem-based strategies were also presented accordingly.

AbstractHigh‐accuracy spectrophotometric pH measurements were taken during a summer cruise to study the pH dynamics and its controlling mechanisms in the northern Gulf of Mexico in hypoxia season. Using the recently available dissociation constants of the purified m‐cresol purple (Douglas &amp; Byrne, 2017, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.marchem.2017.10.001; Müller &amp; Rehder, 2018, https://doi.org/10.3389/fmars.2018.00177), spectrophotometrically measured pH showed excellent agreement with pH calculated from dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and total alkalinity over a wide salinity range of 0 to 36.9 (0.005 ± 0.016, n = 550). The coupled changes in DIC, oxygen, and nutrients suggest that biological production of organic matter in surface water and the subsequent aerobic respiration in subsurface was the dominant factor regulating pH variability in the nGOM in summer. The highest pH values were observed, together with the maximal biological uptake of DIC and nutrients, at intermediate salinities in the Mississippi and Atchafalaya plumes where light and nutrient conditions were favorable for phytoplankton growth. The lowest pH values (down to 7.59) were observed along with the highest concentrations of DIC and apparent oxygen utilization in hypoxic bottom waters. The nonconservative pH changes in both surface and bottom waters correlated well with the biologically induced changes in DIC, that is, per 100‐μmol/kg biological removal/addition of DIC resulted in 0.21 unit increase/decrease in pH. Coastal bottom water with lower pH buffering capacity is more susceptible to acidification from anthropogenic CO2 invasion but reduction in eutrophication may offset some of the increased susceptibility to acidification.

Assessment of Levels, Speciation, and Toxicity of Trace Metal Contaminants in Selected Shallow Groundwater Sources, Surface Runoff, Wastewater, and Surface Water from Designated Streams in Lake Victoria Basin, Uganda.

The levels, speciation of elements, and toxicity of selected trace metals as well as other parameters in selected surface water, shallow groundwater sources, landfill leachate, and associated surface runoff in the Lake Victoria basin, Uganda, were studied. The WHO guidelines, Ugandan standards, Canadian guidelines and Swedish EPA were used for assessment. The shallow groundwater was acidic with pH values below 6.5. The pH, dissolved organic carbon, flouride, and sulphate levels for all springs were below the guideline values although 52.8% was contaminated with nitrates while 39% was contaminated with chloride ions. Some surface water samples had levels of major elements, such as iron, chromium, aluminium, and manganese, above the guideline values. Speciation studies showed that 74% of the metal ions was bound to dissolved organic matter in surface water, whereas in landfill leachates, the dominant ionic species was metal hydroxides or fulvic acid bound. Risk analysis based on the Swedish EPA showed varied risks of negative effects in 30%–76% of the sample sites ranging from high to increased risk in surface water, whereas the results from modelling sorption data using the Bio-met tool showed potential risk to toxicity effects of Cu2+, Ni2+, Zn2+, and Pb2+ in 15.3%–30.8% surface water samples and 8.3%–62.5% groundwater samples.

Particulate organic matter distributions in surface waters of the Pacific Arctic shelf during the late summer and fall season

Climate change is leading to marked decreases in the extent, thickness and persistence of sea ice in Polar Regions, especially during the later summer and fall seasons. The expanded open water domain during this period has the potential to drastically affect the hydrography, biogeochemistry and ecology of Arctic seas. In view of these rapid changes, the distributions of particulate organic matter in surface waters from the Pacific Arctic shelf were determined during the late summer and early fall months (August–October) over four different years (2012, 2015, 2016, and 2017). Utilizing surface underway systems of research vessels in combination with a semi-automated filtration system, over a thousand individual samples from surface waters were collected along the northern Bering Sea and Chukchi Sea shelves. Particulate organic carbon (POC) concentrations and molar carbon:nitrogen ratios ([C:N]) were determined to investigate the distribution and provenance of organic matter in surface waters at a high spatial resolution along the research vessels' navigational paths. Corrections for sorption of dissolved carbon and nitrogen were possible at high frequency because of our sampling techniques. The resulting blank-corrected POC concentrations in surface waters ranged from <2 to 35 μM, with several samples collected earlier (August) in the open water season displaying much higher concentrations (>60 μM). Large spatial and temporal variability characterized measurements throughout the study area, with maxima in POC concentration often measured in association with physical features (e.g., straits, capes, fronts, shoals) and strong wind events. Hydrographically, POC distributions displayed significant variability among water masses in the region. Alaska Coastal Water, which was predominant along the southern section of the study area (between Bering Strait and Pt. Hope), displayed the highest POC concentrations whereas Bering-Chukchi Shelf Water and especially Melt Water, which occupied the northern section of the study area (Pt. Hope to Utquiagvik) were characterized by the lowest POC concentrations. Earlier periods (August–September) also were characterized by higher average POC concentrations than later periods (September–October). Overall, most of the samples collected exhibited [C:N] ratios that ranged from 6 to 8 mol:mol, and were consistent with a predominant marine provenance. Our findings indicate POC distributions reflect patterns of wind forcing and physical circulation and identify regions of localized high standing stocks that suggest spatially and temporarily variable production in this area during the late open-water season.
